(Newsroom America) -- Following a tough year which saw Tiger Woods divorce and entering a rehab program, the golf icon lost his number one world ranking after being at the top for five years straight.

Lee Westwood replaces Woods as the world's No. 1, according to reports, the results of a confusing algorithm that has left many of the sports' analysts scratching their heads.

Nevertheless, Woods has won 14 major championships and many analysts see him regaining the top spot at some point.

For his part, Westwood becomes the first European to hold golf's coveted top slot since Nick Faldo in 1994. Seven years ago, Westwood was ranked 266th; he is only the fourth player to gain the top spot without having ever won a major tournament, reports said.
