(Newsroom America) -- The House is set to vote on a bill that would ban the withdrawal of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families dollars at casinos, strip clubs and liquor stores.
The bill, backed by Republicans, is aimed at ensuring better use of taxpayer dollars, especially in times of high federal deficits, say supporters.
The measure, sponsored by Louisiana Republican Rep. Charles Boustany, was originally included in a larger welfare funding measure in December, but it was stripped out of the final law.
"The abuse of [electronic benefits transfer] cards must stop," Boustany said in December.
Some House Democrats are criticizing the measure, claiming it will stereotype poor Americans.
Democratic Rep. Gwen Moore said it will "humiliate and marginalize" poor people, adding that in some neighborhoods, "he closest ATM is located in a nearby liquor store."
The measure is part of four bills aimed at cutting spending. The House is also considering a measure that would freeze federal pay rates and those of members of Congress. Another measure seeks to cut the budgets of congressional committees.
