Romney Leading Gingrich Ahead of Florida Primary

By Newsroom America Staff at 28 Jan 2012

(Newsroom America) -- Mitt Romney appeared to be regaining his leading status in the Republican race for the White House, as he led rival Newt Gingrich in two polls ahead of the Florida primary.

An Ipsos/Reuters survey showed Romney ahead by 8 points, 42-33 percent, while a separate Quinnipiac University poll had Romney up by 9 points.

Romney appears to have battled back following his loss to Gingrich in South Carolina, and appeared to emerge the clear winner from the latest GOP debate in Tampa earlier in the week.

"With the debates now over, Gingrich will need some other way to reverse the tide that appears to be going against him," said Quinnipiac University pollster Peter Brown.

A primary win in Florida would give the Romney campaign a substantial boost and likely the advantage heading into the remaining contests.

There are seven primaries in February, the first of which is Feb. 4 in Nevada. Analysts say Romney has the potential for strong performances.

Other primaries next month include caucuses in Minnesota and Colorado, along with a primary in Missouri (where Gingrich did not make the ballot) on Feb. 7, followed by Maine, Michigan - where Romney grew up and his father was a governor - and Arizona.
