Poll: Obama Leading both Gingrich, Romney

(Newsroom America) -- A new survey released Friday shows that President Obama is leading both Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney among voters.

The Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll found Obama leading Romney 49-43 percent, with the president leading Gingrich by a much wider margin of 55-37 percent.

Obama also managed his first positive rating in seven months, with 48 percent saying they approved of the job he was doing as president compared with 46 percent who did not approve, the survey said.

Another encouraging sign: 30 percent of the electorate believes the country is now headed in the right direction, compared with just 22 percent last month.

The survey also took measure of the Republican field heading into the Florida primary. Voters preferred Gingrich overall with 37 percent, compared to Romney's 28 percent, Rick Santorum at 18 percent, and Ron Paul at 12 percent.

The survey was conducted from Sunday - Tuesday, before Obama's fiesty State of the Union speech and before he left to campaign in key battleground states.
