(Newsroom America) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry will drop out of the race for the Republican presidential nomination, sources told CNN on Thursday.
The report said Perry would make the announcement prior to the next GOP primary in South Carolina on Saturday.
It wasn't immediately clear if Perry planned to endorse another candidate, CNN reported.
Perry placed a disappointing fifth in Iowa and finished last in New Hampshire, but nevertheless vowed to press on to South Carolina.
"South Carolinians are looking for a conservative candidate that will get this country back working again and I am it," he said last week.
Perry shot to the top of the GOP contender list in August when he announced his candidacy, but a series of gaffes during interviews, along with poor debate performances, his support tanked.
