Edwards Seeks Two-Month Delay in Trial over Medical Condition

(Newsroom America) -- Former Democratic presidential contender John Edwards is seeking a two-month delay in his trial over alleged violations of campaign finance law, citing an undisclosed medical condition.

Edwards, a lawyer and former U.S. senator from North Carolina, is facing six felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from nearly $1 million two top donors paid his campaign so he could hide and care for his pregnant mistress, Rielle Hunter, during his 2008 bid for the White House, WRAL.com reported Friday.

Attorneys for Edwards said they did not have enough time to prepare for the Jan. 30 trial, saying failure to grant an extension "would be likely to result in a miscarriage of justice."

Details regarding Edwards' medical condition were provided to the court under seal, the report said.
